Updike’s Everyman Sold Toyotas - New York Times Blogs

Mr. Updike’s Rabbit books, beginning with “Rabbit, Run,” trace the life of Harry “Rabbit” Angstrom. In “Rabbit Redux,” set in 1979, Angstrom ends up running a Toyota dealership in the fictional Brewster, Pa., and becomes quite wealthy.

By the last book of the series, “Rabbit at Rest,” set mostly in the late 1980s, Rabbit’s son is in charge of the dealership and has run it into the ground, thanks to his coke addiction. Toyota revokes the franchise.

Mr. Updike did not necessarily love the cars. “Toyota, let’s face it, has about the styling imagination of a gerbil,” he has one character grumble. A notice in the front of the last Rabbit novel carefully noted that “No actual Toyota agency in southeastern Pennsylvania is known to the author or in any way depicted herein …”

The dealership was not Mr. Updike’s only depiction of the automotive world. He describes a Volkswagen factory in his 1994 novel “ Brazil ,” an experiment in South American-style magic realism. In that book, Mr. Updike’s heroine is put to work in a factory in Brazil building the Beetle, or as it is called in Portuguese, Fusca. Mr. Updike describes the factory as a “giant shed, whose northern end, like a hungry mouth, took in Volkswagen parts and whose southern end, like a tireless anus, emitted completed fuscas.”

How do I negotiate the best price for a used car: Volkswagen Rabbit OR Toyota Camry?

I'm considering a used Toyota Camry or a new Volkswagen Rabbit. If I go with a used vehicle, there are so many Camrys out there, I don't want to pay $14.00 for every Camry I look up on Consumer reports (which I hear can be done). With the Volkswagen rabbit, since they are new, how do I find out about dealer hold backs, rebates, incentives... and other ways to negotiate the best price?

The best way to negotiate a price is to know the value of the vehicles before hand. Check out the vehicle by going to www.kbb.com and enter the make, model, year of the vehicle in question and click on the radial button for "Excellent", "Good", "Fair" or "Poor" condition. The next page will give you a $ amount you should be paying for that vehicle. Of course this is a round-about-figure but this is a starting place for negotiation. Offer that price or some price a little lower (don't get rediculouse) for the vehicle you are looking at. As far as a new vehicle (Volkswagon Rabbit), most manufacturers show on their website any rebates or incentives that are currently offered. Again, look at the kbb.com website for the "New" vehicle catagory and find out what other people are paying for the same vehicle and negotiate around that price.
God bless!!

How reliable is the 2008 Volkswagen Rabbit?

I just purchased a brand new 2008 Volkswagen Rabbit. I am very excited but of course have my concerns. Are there any common issues that I should keep my eye out for? What is the most important thing I can do to keep my car running flawlessly? How is the integrity of this car?
Why I didn't ask this BEFORE I purchased the car: a family member works for a VW dealership and needed to use his discount before a certain date. I didn't want to miss my chance.

Congratulations on your purchase. The Rabbit is a fine car that shouldn't give you too many headaches, a world of difference from Volkswagens in the past. Better build quality standards and being manufactured in Germany benefit this car greatly. A lot of past yahoo answers claimed it was a new car 'so watch out', but it was actually released in Europe in November 2003 and has proven very reliable, without the 'ghost in the machine' electrical problems of the MKIV Golf. I sold about 120 Rabbits during my tenure with Volkswagen and not one of them was a lemon. The feedback from my customers was excellent and it quickly became my favourite car to sell. I am no longer employed by Volkswagen, I am in the IT sector, but I still recommend Rabbits to everyone I talk to who aspires to have a fun, reliable, sporty, functional car with German build quality and ingenuity.

Can you towing a small U-Haul trailer with a 2007 Volkswagen Rabbit? If so, what do you need?

I'm moving, and I own a 2007 Volkswagern Rabbit. Can you towing a small U-Haul trailer with a 2007 Volkswagen Rabbit? If so, what do you need?

You can probably tow a class 1 trailer (2000 lbs GVWR). You should read your owners manual to make sure what exactly your car can handle.

The only think you would need is a tow hitch and a little practice towing a trailer. I think U-haul gives a small safety tip book when you rent a trailer from them on how to load the trailer and things like that.
