Sgt. Alex Silva scanned the salvage yard, looking for a good target. He walked past the newer models - a raspberry Dodge Neon, a black Ford Escort - and opted for the older, gray Lincoln Town Car.

He pulled a small, brass instrument the size of a bowling alley pencil out of his pocket, held it to the glass and pushed gently, creating a hushed sound, like someone stepping on a thin sheet of ice. The window crumbled into a hundred tiny shards.

"That is how easy it is," he said. "Anyone can buy these gadgets at the hardware shop for about two bucks apiece."

Silva doesn't usually spend his afternoons breaking into cars, but he is getting fed up. He says his district, the 23rd, which spans most of Lake View and Lincoln Park, "leads the city" in automobile break-ins.

He said the 19th District, which includes Roscoe Village and North Center, is roughly on par. Each district sees about 100 car break-ins per month, on average, Silva estimates.

Is it possible to build a sunroof on a 1988 Lincoln Town Car?

Or on any car?
Lincoln did offer this option on Town Cars back in 1988 so there are some available. So is it possible to build/install one on a car that doesn't have one? If so how much would it cost?

I think it might be possible I have seen a new Chrysler 300C and the owner turned it into a convertible

yes, look at aftermarket installers. It may be cheaper to buy another car that has one.

What type of refrigerant does a 1992 Lincoln town car use?

I have a high end 1992 Town Car Cartier and want to recharge the AC but am told it may contain R-12 which would require a costly retrofit to R134A. Others have told me that some Lincoln's in late 1992 did come with R-134A. Any thoughts on which type would be more likely to be the case and if necessary, how expensive would a retrofit from R-12 to R-134A be? Thank's!

Some manufacturers used R-12 up through the 1993 model years, and switched to R-134 with the 1994 models. The EPA banned the production of R-12 ( Freon ) in the US effective January 1, 1996. More than likely your car was built to use R-134a refrigerant though. If it used R-12 originally though and has been converted to use the R-134a refrigerant, the attachment points where you hook up the hoses to recharge the A/C system will have also been changed. Different fittings for using R-12 vs R-134a. If the cars A/C system has been serviced and been functioning over the years I am sure it has probably been converted over to R-134a at some time if it didn't come that way. If not, the cost of the conversion is definitely cheaper than trying to obtain R-12 or similar replacement gas on the market. It has gotten very expensive, but it is still available in some places.

How do you change the windshield wipers in a 1985 Lincoln Town Car?

I have a 1985 Lincoln Town Car and I can't figure out how to change the windshield wipers. I tried opening the hood and changing them that way but that didn't work. They don't pull straight up and turning them on then off when they are up doesn't work either. They just go back down. Can someone help me?

dr layne is right. Turn off the key, when wipers are midway up the windshield, so you can pull the arm straight out away from the windsheild, grab the wiper and flip it over. This will allow you to remove the entire head, not the arm. Then follow the directions that came with the new wipers. I would suggest replace the entire wiper head, not just the rubber piece and get an expensive set of wipers ($10.00), not the cheapest ($3.00).
