Edscha, the German company that supplies soft-top and folding hard-top roofs for the bulk of Britain’s range-topping convertible sports cars, has gone into administration.

Edscha supplies Aston Martin, Jaguar and Rolls-Royce from a factory in Coventry, which is currently still operating despite the parent company in Germany putting all its European operations into protective insolvency.

“We are supporting our supplier at this difficult time and are continuing to produce cars,” said a spokesman for Aston Martin.

The DB9 Volante and V8 Vantage Roadster use hoods supplied by Edscha as do the Jaguar XK and Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe.

The BMW 3-series and 6-series convertibles and Z4 also use Edscha-supplied hoods. Although the new Mini Convertible uses a Karmann hood.

Edscha has put all its European operations under the protection of the courts because trade has dropped off in the economic downturn.

The company is owned by Carlyle Group, a US private-equity group, who took control in 2002.

Yeah, they're very rare. I've only seen one at a motor show but never on the open road and seeing one on the highway is very lucky too

They still sell them, but no one buys them because they are too expensive and not worth the extra price.
