Style meets utility in VW's Routan - Calgary Herald
06.02.09
The last new VW van sold in Canada was the 2003 Eurovan. According to John White, executive vice-president of Volkswagen Canada, "The Eurovan was what I would call a large minivan, and it was a high-priced vehicle which was great for carrying lots of people and payload. "But because it was at the top end of the spectrum in pricing and not very flexible in its content, it wasn't a competitive vehicle." Fast forward and Volkswagen --with only the five-passenger Touareg to offer--wanted to become more active in the truck and van segment. "Although minivan sales are decreasing, it's still a large market,"White says. "We saw a need for a seven-passenger vehicle, and we couldn't modify the Touareg, so we (entered) into a partnership that would bring a VW minivan to market." And that partnership is with Chrysler. The new 2009 VW Routan is underpinned by a Chrysler platform. While a good portion of the van is Chrysler technology, White says there is no mistaking the 2009 Routan for anything other than a VW product with his company's own body design, trim and fit and finish.

Which car should we get, the Lexus RX or the Volkswagen Touareg 2?
Nov 20, 2007 by rmat257 | Posted in Buying & Selling
We are looking for a nice SUV for 4 people (2 adults and 2 kids). Our choices are the Lexus RX350, RX400h (hybrid), or the Volkswagen Touareg 2. The Lexus is very different, as it has a more "cushy" ride, while the VW is German-engineered. We want a good ride (we just had the Volvo XC90 and HATED IT) and nice features. Also, we go on family ski trips to Vermont several times in the winter, so we need decent cargo space. The VW has more features it seems, like 4-Zone climate-control with heated seats for the kids (especially for ski trips), a Rest button (where it keeps the car warm up to 30 minutes after the car was turned off), Keyless Access, and more. But the Lexus is more luxurious, with really soft leather seats, a lot of wood paneling, and chrome door handles. Again, the Lexus seems small as far as cargo space. Which should we get?
I think the RX would do pretty well in the snow. My friend has the older version of it and he got to and from Lake Tahoe without any problems. What i like about the RX is that its comfortable and its reliable (reliability is very important to me especially on long trips) and the interior is pretty nice. The Touraeg is nice too and it does a little better off road, but I dont think its as reliable as the RX and i've heard that the RX 350 gets better gas mileage than the Touraeg (the Touraeg is a heavy vehicle, so the engine needs to use more gas to move its frame) I've seen the trunk space of both vehicles and to me, its about the same. The backseat of the RX is a 40-20-40 split folding bench while the Touraeg is only 40-60 (i'm guessing you can fold the middle seat down for more space and the kids still can sit in the bigger seats) Both vehicles cost about the same (The touraeg can be more expensive if you want the package with the brighter xenon headlights, the package with 4 zone climate control and the navi package (the price i got was 2,900 + 3,400 +3,350) but on the RX, the lights, navi and other stuff is just rolled up into 1 package that costs about 6,206...both vehicles start at about 39K)
If these 2 were your only option, i would recommed the RX because I think it can get you guys to the ski resorts and back without any problems and even the non-hybrid is more fuel efficient. Its more reliable and the ride is more comfortable (a good ride can lead to a happy "on the way there" and having a vehicle with great reliablity ratings is always good) If you are open to other recommendations, then I would recommend checking out the 07 Acura MDX. It costs about the same as these 2 and its capable in the snow (Car and Driver Magazine tested it out and says its a very good SUV: http://www.acura.com/content/MDX/Learn/AwardsReviews/Reviews/MDX_eprint.pdf ) and I would also recommend checking out the Audi Q7 3.6 (base) the MDX and Q7 both have a split folding 3rd row which can be used for more trunk space.
for the entire Car and Driver comparasion:
http://www.caranddriver.com/comparisons/12669/eight-tickets-to-paradise-we-compare-eight-50000-luxury-suvs.html
oh and the RX is supposed to have 38.3 cu. ft of cargo space (thats with the seats up) compared to the Touraeg's 31 cu ft (these are from the car makers websites) and i've heard that VWs tend to have more problems than Lexus
