Looking for a beefy tax credit? A new hybrid car could be your ticket to thousands of dollars off your bottom line. But the rules are tricky … what you don’t know may hurt you (in the wallet). The tax credit on hybrids is highly dependent upon the make and model of the vehicle. The US Government’s hybrid car tax credit is designed to spur the production and purchase of new fuel-efficient vehicles, by tweaking the rules of supply and demand.
The hybrid tax credits are setup so that once a date and production marks have been met, the hybrid car’s tax credits are ratcheted down until they reach zero. A brand new hybrid car’s tax credit might be as high as $3400 when it is first offered for sale - as is the case with the new 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid and Mercury Milan Hybrid - with the goal of spurring early adopters.
If you want a new Toyota Prius, you’ll have to do without the hybrid tax rebate … as the hybrid car tax credit ran out on the Prius way back in 2007. In fact, you won’t get a tax break on any hybrid Toyotas. Honda buyers are currently out of luck, when it comes to hybrid tax incentives, as well … the tax credit for hybrid Civics ran out at the end of 2008.
The only hybrid tax breaks currently in force are on the Nissan Altima Hybrid, along with a wide range of Ford and GM vehicles.

Despite being smaller and less roomy than the family sedans in the test group, the diesel-powered Volkswagen Jetta TDI outranked them all. Prices for the conventional cars in this group range from $20,735 for the four-cylinder Sonata to $30,790 for the V6 Mazda6 Grand Touring. The test group findings Hyundai Sonata (26 mpg overall, four cylinder, 22 mpg overall, V6). This freshened sedan packs a lot of gear for the price and delivers a pleasant ride, a quiet and spacious cabin and very good fit and finish. Its four-cylinder engine provides reasonable power and attains impressive fuel economy, while the V6 powertrain boasts top-grade refinement. Driving enthusiasts need not apply, though: Its handling, though secure, does not make it fun to drive. Reliability has been very good, and the Sonata is a CR recommended model. Chevrolet Malibu (25 mpg overall). The four-cylinder Malibu has been updated with a six-speed automatic transmission that improves the fuel economy and throttle response. It remains well-rounded overall, though no qualities are outstanding. It handles well and has a competent powertrain and a very quiet, spacious, well-trimmed cabin. First-year reliability has been very good, and the Malibu is a CR recommended model.

I know the gas can get more milege but the crude oil may not enough in the future and the price is higher and higher.
CNG/LPG/Hydrogen stations should be more and more......
I think the Prius is the best because you get a reliable car that is easy to maintain with the best mileage.
I own a 2007 Prius and avg. 50 mpg in the summer and about 44mpg in the winter.
If you need the room and utility of an SUV, I would choose the Escape Hybrid. 3,000 tax credit (2WD) on the Escape Hybrid through the end of the year is excellent, as well.
The Mazda Tribute is the same vehicle as the Escape with a Mazda badge. The Tribute Hybrid is only available in CA.
The Malibu and Aura are not true hybrids in the sense of what Toyota and Honda (Civic) are doing.
If you look at the specs of the Malibu and the Aura, you are only going to get 2 mpg more per gallon than the 4 cylinder, but will pay over $4,000 more for the hybrid. Not worth it.
Oh and why not buy a Diesel? Because they cost much more than a hybrid and the cost of diesel fuel is 20-25% more than regular gas.

TOTAL TRIP MILES/ AVG MPG = total gas needed.
Both numbers available online.
Tank capacity of the car is published in the owner's manual.
