Chevy's Colorado and GMC 's Canyon are the Rodney Dangerfields of the mid-size pickup category. During their first five years of existence, they earned all the respect they deserved: nada.

Blame it on birthright. The early twenty-first century liaison between General Motors and Isuzu assigned the Japanese partner to the lead engineering role. Unfortunately, Isuzu's creativity wasn't up to GM's minimum standards, so the design had to be rejiggered, delaying introduction until the 2004 model year and prolonging the lives of the clunky S-10 and Sonoma pickups. To further cripple any chance of success, GM torpedoed the new powertrain roster. While the 2.8-liter DOHC four-cylinder base engine was reasonably competitive, the 3.5-liter in-line five faced enemies armed with six- and eight-cylinder engines.

Power and torque were not the issue. The five, subsequently upped to 3.7 liters, is still available and currently provides a healthy 242 hp and 242 lb-ft of torque. But when bar talk turns to engines, the joke's on any pickup owner who admits he's packing a five-shooter.

Canyon (or Colorado) Lift Kit - 4wd vs. 2wd..?

I drive a ‘04 GMC Canyon Crew cab, 3.5L in-line 5. I already have a 2.5" ReadyLift front-ender on it, and I'm looking at slapping a suspension (and eventually a body) lift on 'er. I've been shopping around for lift kits, and I come across a lot of lifts that are made for the 2wd canyon. I have a 2wd that comes equipped with the 4wd high and low settings. The question is...am I looking to purchase a 4wd kit or a 2wd kit? And if anyone had some cost saving suggestions, as to brand of lift, etc. that would work for my rig I would be very appreciative. Thanks in advance.

You need a 4x4 (4wd) lift kit.
I would go with rough country or skyjacker.

Want to buy a 4 door crew cab 4 wheel drive Colorado or Canyon, much of a difference in the two?

I own a Canyon and have driven both. Of course they are the same truck except for the front end and badging. I was surprised by the power of the in line 5 cylinder engine, but they both have the same engine options. It all depends on which one you think looks better. You may, however, get a few more bells and whistles with the GMC. Don't listen to the person telling you to buy Dodge. I used to sell Dodges and we were told by the factory reps. that they're only designed to run for 150Kmi before needing major work, but don't tell anybody ;-)

a crew cab or quad cab or extreme. one with 80,000 miles or less , clean truck very few light scratches and no dents and loaded? just an estimate please or what would be reasonable

I would say 4-6 grand considering its in the shape you've described
