Shelton man critical after Merritt rollover - Connecticut Post

FAIRFIELD -- A 64-year-old Shelton man was in critical condition Thursday from injuries he suffered when his sport-utility vehicle hit a tree Wednesday night on the Merritt Parkway, rolled over and caught fire.

Thomas Connelly, of Henry Drive, is being treated for his injuries in the intensive-care unit of St. Vincent's Medical Center in Bridgeport.

Assistant Fire Chief George Gomola said Connelly was the only occupant of the vehicle, a 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer.

Two good Samaritans helped pull Connelly from the burning wreck, Gomola said. One of the rescuers is believed to have been an off-duty firefighter from New Canaan and the other an automobile technician, he said, but they left the scene before authorities could get their names.

"If it wasn't for their actions, the driver would have probably died," Gomola said.

Police said Connelly lost control of his vehicle, although the underlying reasons for the crash are not known. The crash remains under investigation.
