Mercury Mariner Hybrid - Daily Camera

We were intrigued during a visit to New York City by the large number of Ford Escape Hybrid taxis plying the streets of Manhattan.
Makes sense when you figure hybrids are at their best in slow stop and go traffic. The gas engine remains at rest much of the time. And a small SUV that will comfortably hold as many passengers and as much luggage as a big Crown Vic while deriving as much as 10 more miles to the gallon is a smart move.
The window sticker markup over a standard gas engine vehicle is easily made up over the hundreds of thousands of miles cabbies drive their cars.
But you don't have to be a New York cab driver to benefit from a small hybrid sport utility. Hybrid SUVs are family-friendly as well.
The Escape Hybrid is entering its fifth model year and it — and its twin the Mercury Mariner — have been blessed with continual upgrades and improvements.
A restyled exterior and an upgraded interior came for the 2008 model year, and for 2009 the hybrid twins get more power while at the same time yielding slightly better gas mileage.

What states is the Mercury Mariner Hybrid available in?

I live in illinois but none of the local dealers seem to have it.
They should be available in all states, but California emissions states probably have first dibs on them. I know I have them at the dealership I work at in Maryland.

Is the Mercury Mariner Hybrid a car worth looking at? If so, why?

We're looking to get a new car, and we're really interested in buying a hybrid. The Mariner seems to be priced right, and I like what I'm hearing out of Ford.
The Mercury Mariner Hybrid is a luxury version of the Ford Escape Hybrid.
Emissions are far cleaner on the Hybrid Mariner than the regular Mariner. (Note that the Hybrid Mariner is only available as a 4WD model.) Chances are that as the luxury model, the hybrid system may be tweaked for more power (higher HP/acceleration) rather than fuel economy.
http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/bymodel/2007_Mercury_Mariner.shtml
4cyl 4wd Mariner: 21/24 city/highway EPA MPG
6cyl 4wd Mariner: 19/23 city/highway EPA MPG
4cyl 4wd Hybrid Mariner (power equiv. of 6cyl): 32/29 city/highway EPA MPG
Hybrid system warranty (which includes the hybrid battery) is for 8 years/100,000 miles in the US, but the AT-PZEV version sold in CA emission states has a further hybrid battery warranty out to 10 years/150,000 miles.
Maintenance is pretty much the same for the hybrid as the non-hybrid.
Don't forget the US federal income tax credit for the 2007 Mercury Mariner Hybrid at $1950.

if you are going for savings rather than vehicle appointments, I might suggest looking at a Ford Escape Hybrid in the FWD option, with a $2600 tax credit and EPA MPG of 36/31 city/highway.
Ford's hybrid system was so similar to that of Toyota's THS, that Ford is paying Toyota licensing fees. (Toyota has since upgraded to using the THS-II, aka "Hybrid Synergy Drive", on all its hybrids starting with the 2004 model year.)
You might want to talk to some owners and discuss your concerns at:

My question is how is the acceleration on the Mercury Mariner Hybrid?

It's actually pretty good, the engine is fairly decent sized for the size of the SUV. And under heavyish acceleration you're using the gasoline engine anyways.
