The attractive new Saturn Vue is offered in three forms and two trim levels. It's available in a gasoline fueled version, a performance-oriented Red Line version and Green Line hybrid.

The Vue Green Line is one of the lowest-cost hybrid SUVs on the market today. It is powered by a unique electric motor/generator coupled to a 2.4-liter VVT four-cylinder and a modified four-speed automatic transmission with a shift switch on the stalk. The simple and flexible hybrid design provides additional power from the motor/generator during acceleration while allowing 20 percent greater fuel economy by shutting off the engine at idle and cutting off fuel delivery during deceleration. The Vue Green Line delivers approximately 25 mpg during city driving and up to 32 mpg during highway operation. Regenerative braking plays a significant role in the Vue Green Line's efficiency.

The Vue Green Line's hybrid system costs less than $2,000, enabling Saturn to market the vehicle starting at $24,170, placing it just $1,500 to $2,000 more than its stable mates - roughly half that of most other SUV hybrids. Saturn was able to keep the Vue Green Line in budget territory by combining the electric drive motor with the alternator, mounted in front of the engine, eliminating the necessity of a major re-engineering for fitment.

I know the gas can get more milege but the crude oil may not enough in the future and the price is higher and higher.
CNG/LPG/Hydrogen stations should be more and more......

I think the Prius is the best because you get a reliable car that is easy to maintain with the best mileage.
I own a 2007 Prius and avg. 50 mpg in the summer and about 44mpg in the winter.
If you need the room and utility of an SUV, I would choose the Escape Hybrid. 3,000 tax credit (2WD) on the Escape Hybrid through the end of the year is excellent, as well.
The Mazda Tribute is the same vehicle as the Escape with a Mazda badge. The Tribute Hybrid is only available in CA.

The Malibu and Aura are not true hybrids in the sense of what Toyota and Honda (Civic) are doing.
If you look at the specs of the Malibu and the Aura, you are only going to get 2 mpg more per gallon than the 4 cylinder, but will pay over $4,000 more for the hybrid. Not worth it.

Oh and why not buy a Diesel? Because they cost much more than a hybrid and the cost of diesel fuel is 20-25% more than regular gas.

Hybrid Maintenance?

I am considering buying a hybrid (specifically a Saturn Vue Green Line). I've heard rumors that the hybrids require extra maintenance and therefore you spend all the money you save in fuel on maintenance for the hybrid system. No one can give me specific information, just heresay. When I asked at the dealership, they said that there is no extra maintenance for the hybrid system, but of course, they are trying to make a sale. Can anyone with personal experience shed some light on this for me? Thanks!

There is no extra maintenance for the Green Line Hybrid System, only the regular, routine maintenance that you would perform on any other vehicle. You can even look in the owner's manual while you are at the dealership.
