Suzuki aims its XL7 sport-utility truck squarely at the bottom of the larger SUV market, but it tries to win sales with a modest price tag and seating for seven.

Certainly there are plenty of large SUVs that will hold seven, but they generally are larger than the XL7, which checks in at 197.2 inches in length and rides on a 112.4-inch wheelbase. The new Ford Flex wagon, for instance, is nearly 202 inches long and rides on a 117.9-inch wheelbase. Chevrolet's Traverse is 205 inches long and has a 118.9-inch wheelbase.

Both are considerably more expensive than the XL7, too, commonly fitting into the 35 grand - or more - neighborhood. The loaded white test ute, a Limited version with front-wheel drive, started at $28,030 and with delivery fee hit $28,780. Moving up to the all-wheel-drive Limited pushes that to $29,680 plus delivery, still modest for this market.

Like all vehicles, there's also a lower-priced base model and several layers between that and this upscale model.
