It's unusual and exciting when a SUV like the Volkswagen Tiguan comes along that both stands out and is fun to drive.

Funny name aside, Tiguan is a little rocket with super handling and good grip in the snow. The latter fact is because the tested truck was the SE 4Motion model, the mid-level Tiguan with all-wheel drive.

There are three levels of Tiguan, the base S, starting about $24,000, the tested SE with 4Motion, starting at $28,875, and the SEL, starting at about $31,000. That makes this a pricey small SUV, compared with Ford's Escape, Toyota's RAV4, Jeep's Liberty and Honda's CRV.

Tiguan boasts a 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder that is turbocharged to pack in 200 horsepower. The engine, built in Hungary, is torque-strong and kicks the SUV, which has a 102.5-inch wheelbase and is 174.3 inches long, up to highway speeds like it's a sports car. There's a tiny turbo lag, but you won't care.

The VW engine works well with its 6-speed automatic, a Tiptronic design that allows you to shift it manually if you prefer. Or you can put it in the sport mode that holds the lower gears longer for instant blastoff. I used that a lot, even when there was snow on the streets, and the Tiguan never lost grip.
