There was little good news for GM and Chrysler in the U.S. auto sales totals that were reported this week . GM’s sales were down 49%, and Chrysler’s 55%. But dig through the numbers and the picture actually gets worse.

Take sales per dealer. GM, Chrysler and Ford all have more dealers than they need. GM sold 128,198 cars and light trucks, and it has 4,650 dealers — an average of 19 per franchise. Chrysler sold 62,197 vehicles through its 3,300 dealers for the same average -– 19. Toyota has just 1,200 dealers, and it sold 117,287 -– an average of 97 per dealer, which means Toyota dealers are making more money, have more customers coming in for service, can spend more on their customer amenities and offer better service.

The big drop in GM and Chrysler sales was mainly the result of large declines in sales to rental car companies and other “fleet” customers. A close look at the sales numbers shows both companies have several models that were being sold almost exclusively as rental cars, and very few “real customers” are choosing them at dealerships.
