BMW 3-Series Sports Wagon

The 3-Series Sports Wagon is BMW’s near-luxury wagon that was redesigned for 2006. BMW's 3-Series model is a descendant of the BMW 1600 from the 1960s, considered by many automotive enthusiasts to be the first compact sedan offering sports car performance. The 3-Series designation first appeared in America in 1977, and the car evolved from a rather boxy shape to its present fluid, aerodynamic design. The 2000 3-Series was introduced in 1999 and the 3-Series Sport Wagon joined the 3-Series lineup in the U.S. for the first time in the spring of 2000. The name is changed to 3-Series Sports Wagon for 2006 when it was updated with an all-new look, upgraded engines and a new chassis.

The 3 Series is a delight to drive, with agile handling and a firm yet supple and controlled ride. Fit and finish is excellent, but the cabin is snug. Both the 328i and 335i are powered by smooth 3.0-liter, six-cylinder engines. Our tested 328i is very sporty and has excellent steering feel. It returned very good fuel economy for this class, 23 mpg overall, even with the six-speed automatic. However, it requires premium fuel. The optional all-wheel drive takes its toll on acceleration and fuel economy. Some controls are complex. Crash-test results are impressive, but the convertible didn't do as well in the IIHS side-impact test. A diesel engine arrives for 2009.

A new tax regime will put more prestige cars on the menu, writes Barry Park.

Australians will soon have more cars to choose from as top-end manufacturers take advantage of the Federal Government's decision to give tax breaks to fuel-efficient luxury cars.

BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi are looking to sell cars they otherwise would not have considered for Australian drivers because the change in the luxury car tax will slash thousands of dollars off their price tags.

Some of the vehicles weren't considered for local introduction because they were deemed to be too expensive for their power output in a market that values effortless performance and has enjoyed relatively affordable fuel for decades.

The vehicles being considered typically have diesel engines, which can use 25 per cent to 30 per cent less fuel than a similar-performing petrol engine. Some are small-capacity engines designed for Europe's strict emissions regulations.

Audi has confirmed it is considering up to seven new models for the local market, while BMW says its latest diesel version of the 3 Series would not have seen Australian shores if the tax law hadn't changed.

Rear window glass keeps popping open on BMW 3-Series Sports Wagon,Why?

I can not use manaul release to open, only switch on key. It continually opens on it's own unless I lock all.

The problem will almost certainly be either an intermittent short in the switch unit (under the rear wiper fixing) or water ingress under the rear spoiler on top of the rear tailgate glass causing a short where the switch connects to the vehicle wiring.

The most probable cause will be a short in the switch itself.

You can prove this by removing the trim on the inside of the glass (behind where the switch fits- 2x 10mm nuts) and disconnect the switch there.

Replacing the switch involves removing the wiper arm (13mm nut) and the switch unit itself (24mm Nut and another 10mm on the inside of the glass)

volvo v50 or bmw 3 series sports wagon?

i am looking for a new wagon, and have narowed down my choices. which do you think is better? could you please list the advatages and disadvantages of each? thanks a lot!

I would take the Volvo because they ahve known to be more reliable than BMW's, and Volvos are the safest car on the road. The Volvo still has competative peformance and handling to the 3 Series. Check it out here http://www.volvocars.us/models/v50/
