It's a solid little car, economical and priced right for the younger starter market. What's needed now is some slightly more loaded small cars to appeal to those demanding more creature comforts.

The sedan version of the Aveo, first launched here in 2004, got the facelift last model year and this time the Aveo5 five-door hatchback gets the update.

The new exterior design makes it look far more like a Chevy and less like the domestic Daewoo, with its distinctive upper and lower grills.

Actually, the appearance change goes beyond the grille as the whole shape takes on the new Chevy styling, which is also found in larger, North Americanmade models.

It's still not going to turn any heads but its "tall car" look--don't say top-heavy --sure makes it stand out from other econoboxes on the market.

Vertically blessed drivers frequently find entry to small cars a challenge, but not so with the Aveo, with its aforementioned tall profile. Once inside it is deceptively roomy upfront, though less so in the rear. Who seriously is going to load it with five folks for more than a short hop?

The twins are made for GM Canada by the company's Daewoo subsidiary in South Korea. There are two body styles: a four-door sedan and a five-door hatchback. Typically, the Pontiac has a few more standard features that cause the base price to be a bit higher.

If I bring an inspector of my own, how much should I pay for him?

I live in Montreal/Canada

In New York State, a state inspection costs $21 per year unless the car is less than 2 years old.

If you mean how much a mechanic would charge to evaluate the car before you buy it, that might cost about $50-100 or so.
